Huron Valley MLK Day Presents- City of Hope

  • The SHAC 155 E. Commerce, Suite 101 Milford, MI United States (map)

We are honored to host a powerful Smithsonian poster exhibition at The SHAC this January.
City of Hope: Resurrection City & The 1968 Poor People’s Campaign tells the story of the 43-day protest against poverty that followed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s call for economic justice. Through historic images and compelling narratives, this display highlights the creation of “Resurrection City,” a temporary community built on the National Mall where thousands gathered to advocate for dignity, fairness, and opportunity for all.

The exhibition will be on display at The SHAC from January 4–24, offering our community a chance to reflect on this important chapter of the civil rights movement and its continued relevance today.

We invite you to join us for a Public Reception on January 4 from 1:00–3:00 PM, where guests can explore the display, learn more about the Huron Valley MLK Day initiative, and connect with others in honoring Dr. King’s legacy.

2026 Contest “The Great Force of Nonviolence”

The theme of the 2026 contest is “The Great Force of Nonviolence,” allowing artists and writers to take inspiration from the Civil Rights Movement's focus on equality and acceptance and turn it into a new creative submission, whether it be a painting, photograph, speech, song, or another medium.

Prizes will be awarded in three age categories (11 and under, 12-17, and 18 and older) and submissions will be displayed at The Suzanne Haskew Arts Center (The SHAC) during the week prior and during the March on Main Street Sunday, January 18, 2026.  Winners and other selected submissions will be highlighted during the March on Main's concluding ceremony.

All entries will be judged based on overall quality and interpretation of this year’s theme. Submissions are to be dropped-off at Carls Family YMCA by Friday, January 9, 2026.
